Amoxicillin Allergy Testing
Did you know that over 90% of children that are labeled as “allergic” to penicillin are not truly allergic?
De-Labeling penicillin allergies allows people to receive the most appropriate antibiotic for an infection.
We are excited to announce that we are able to offer your child Amoxicillin (Penicillin) Allergy testing in our Northwestern Office! The Amoxicillin challenge is considered to be the best way to determine whether your child is truly allergic to penicillin.
Eligible patients are children, age 2 years and older, who have had a minor reaction such as a rash when taking Amoxicillin. We are not testing children who had a severe reaction of anaphylaxis, serum sickness or hives within 24 hrs of taking the medication.
If you feel your child is a candidate for testing you can schedule the following visits.
1. First visit: Telemedicine Visit
This visit is to discuss the amoxicillin reaction to ensure your child is eligible, discuss testing protocol and prescribe the Amoxicillin to be used for in-office testing.
2. Second visit: In-person Challenge Visit at our Northwestern Office
You are to bring the dose of Amoxicillin prescribed to you. We will give your child a portion of the dose while closely monitoring them. If tolerated, your child will receive the remaining dose with continued monitoring. Please plan to be here for 1.5-2 hours (90-120 min). Please bring activities to keep your child occupied and entertained (screen time is ok). There will be no eating allowed during that time. Water is the only liquid allowed.
You may call our office at (312) 202-0300 to schedule the initial visit by telemedicine. These challenges will occur at our Northwestern Office at 737 N. Michigan Ave. Suite 820.
